Invercargill
As the southernmost city of New Zealand, Invercargill is the capital of Southland. Southland was the scene of early contact between Europeans and Māori with many whalers and missionaries settling on its shores. Invercargill is only 18km away from Bluff, the lowest point of the South Island and a 2.5 hour drive from Dunedin. It has a number of Edwardian and Art Deco heritage buildings as well as many lively bars and restaurants. It is also very close to areas where you can view wildlife such as seals and penguins.
