First explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, Franz Josef Glacier is 5km from Franz Josef township. See the glacier from the sky in a helicopter or plane ride where you will see rainforests, waterfalls, lakes, mountains and of course the glacier itself. Franz Josef township contains many places to stay, a wildlife centre and Glacier Hot Pools.
