Whāngārei’s Town Basin is a picturesque international yachting marina with restaurants and cafes, specialty shopping, art, culture and entertainment, history and heritage, and walkways. There is plenty to do and see and the area is wheelchair and pedestrian friendly with flat pavement. There are accessible bathrooms along the main stretch by the Tourist Info which are kept remarkably clean. While nearby, pop into the Tourist Info and pick up an ‘Access Whāngārei’ leaflet. This handy guide is full of things to do and see in Whāngārei that are accessible to all levels of mobility. The Tourist Info Site also offers free access to two manual wheelchairs and a motorised scooter, but you may need to book ahead. It is definitely worth going down to the basin for lunch, a look around or just a coffee and wheel/walk down the boardwalk.
